Outdoor Recreation Programs Cancelled due to Air Quality Warning – Update 1 July 16, 2026

Due to the elevated Orange Air Quality Warning issued as a result of the ongoing wildfire smoke causing very poor air quality and the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) health risk, the Township of Tiny has extended the cancellation of all outdoor recreation programs throughout Friday, July 17, 2026, and the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2026.

The health and safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff remains our top priority. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide additional updates as the air quality improves or if further program changes are required.

Participants registered in affected recreation programs will be contacted directly where applicable.

Summer Day Camp programming will continue to operate with modifications and has moved to indoor activities, and indoor programs will continue as normal.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Recommendations

During heavy smoke conditions, everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or health status. 

Environment and Climate Change Canada has recommended several ways to help protect yourself from the impact of poor air quality, such as:

• Limit time outdoors. Reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events.
• When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
• If you must spend time outdoors, limit the time as much as possible.

Fire Ban in Effect

As a reminder, there is an active Fire Ban in effect until further notice. All open-air burning is prohibited, and fire permits are suspended.

The fire ban is due to the extreme temperatures and lack of any significant precipitation, as well as poor air quality conditions due to smoke drifting into the region from northwestern wildfires.

The fire hazard rating has been raised to extreme. An extreme danger rating means extremely dry forest fuel and ground vegetation. The fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts.
