Concerns About Campaign Activities

Municipal elections in Ontario are governed by the provincial Municipal Elections Act, 1996(link is external) (MEA) which provides rules for the administration of elections.

The MEA expressly states that the Clerk is responsible for the preparation and conduct of municipal elections, however, staff are not in a position to interpret the legislation, provide advice to Candidates or Third Party Advertisers, or investigate or review any campaign related matters.

Enforcement of the MEA is done through the Courts. The Ministry of Municipal affairs and Housing does not have a role in investigating elections or in determining penalties.
