(Tiny, Ontario) The Township of Tiny has upgraded the pedestrian crosswalk in Wyevale, located on Concession Road 5 East, to increase pedestrian safety in our community.

The multi-coloured crosswalk was recently refreshed with new paint in addition to other added safety features. The colourful design was originally spurred by a partnership with Wyevale Public Central School and displays the winning design of the student Crosswalk Design Competition which was unveiled in 2022.

New for this year, the township has also installed a push-button flashing beacon for the crosswalk, added speed-radar signs to display a driver’s current speed, and upgraded the posted speed signs with flashing beacons.

The Township of Tiny would like to remind everyone to use extra caution in school zones as children return to school next week.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the safety of our roadways and increase active transportation options for the Tiny community,” said Mayor David Evans. “The refresh of the Wyevale crosswalk draws the attention of motorists, and provides a safer experience for pedestrians, especially children attending Wyevale Central Public School. As kids will be heading back to the classrooms next week, and some for the first time, we would also like to remind everyone to slow down and use extra caution, especially in school zones.”

Drivers are asked to stop behind the yield line when pedestrians want to cross, make eye contact so pedestrians see you, and wait until the pedestrian completely crosses the road.

Pedestrians are reminded to push the button to initiate the beacon lights, wait for traffic to stop both ways, and make eye contact to ensure drivers see you before crossing the road.

Cyclists are reminded that when riding with traffic, to follow the rules of the road and stop to let pedestrians cross. When using the crosswalk, ensure you dismount and walk your bike across the road.

As a safety reminder for parents, now is a great time to show your children how to safely cross the road such as teaching them to stay to the side of the road and walk as far away from traffic as they safely can. As well, it is important for children to understand that they should wait at the edge of the sidewalk, wait for traffic to stop, and look both ways before crossing the road.
