(Tiny, Ontario) The Township of Tiny’s Municipal Law Enforcement Department is reminding existing Short-Term Rental (STR) property owners to renew their licence for 2027.
Short-Term Rental By-law 22-017, as amended, allows up to 300 short-term rental licences to be issued annually. Only short-term-rental owners with approved 2026 licences can initiate the renewal application process. All licences expire annually on December 31 and need to be renewed and approved to operate the following calendar year.
The Short-Term Rental By-law helps to ensure that accommodation units are safe for both property owners and renters. The process is administered through the STR licensing program that follows a cost recovery model.
STR Fees and Renewals
All STR licences expire on December 31 of each year and must be renewed annually. Any 2026 STR licence holder that renews for their 2027 STR licence prior to December 31, 2026, will pay $1750. If a 2026 STR licence holder does not renew by December 31, and chooses to apply later in 2027, their application will be expired and their application will be subject to the new application/expired licence fee of $2000. Remember that advertising for the 2027 season is not permitted without an approved 2027 licence.
Licence fees help with cost recovery of staff time spent on inspections, administration, and enforcement for the licensing program. The difference in fee amounts is intended to incentivize timely renewals and reduce the administrative burden and operational costs associated with processing expired applications, including inspections and reinitiating the application process.
The 2027 renewal process is now open! Property owners with a valid 2026 STR licence are encouraged to apply early to ensure that staff are available to assist with any questions. to ensure they take advantage of the reduced fee, and so that staff are available to assist with any questions.
Fire Inspection Requirement
As part of the annual Short-Term Rental licence renewal process, all applicants are required to successfully complete an on-site Fire Department inspection before Fire Department approval can be granted. Property owners are responsible for ensuring their rental property complies with all applicable fire safety requirements. Any deficiencies identified during the inspection must be corrected before approval can be issued, and a re-inspection may be required to verify compliance. Applicants are encouraged to arrange their Fire Department inspections as early as possible, as incomplete inspections or outstanding fire safety deficiencies may delay the approval of their 2027 STR licence.
Reminder: The Township Office will be closed for Winter Holidays beginning December 24, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) and will reopen on January 4, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Please apply early so that staff are able to assist and answer questions prior to the closure.
If you have never had a licence before, please visit www.tiny.ca/STR to understand what is required and how to start the process. It is against the law to operate a short-term rental prior to obtaining a licence from the municipality.
Renewal licence applications are now open. For more information or to apply online, visit the township’s website at www.tiny.ca/STR.
