(Tiny, Ontario) Over the last few months, the Township of Tiny’s Public Works Department has replaced two aging playgrounds, installed two new accessible boardwalks, and connected two separate trail networks as part of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan (“the Plan”).

The Plan was completed in April of 2019, and provides recommendations and strategic directions for the provision of services and facilities through to 2029. It incorporates accessible and inclusive features into the design of community spaces. Suggestions from the Plan often exceed the minimum standards that municipalities must follow for accessibility through legislation like the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (“AODA”).

“It’s important to the township that residents and visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy our public spaces,” said Mayor David Evans. “These improvements are about investing in the wellness of our community and moving beyond what is mandated through the AODA”.

Some of the specific improvements include:

  • the replacement of the playgrounds at Wyevale Park and Lafontaine Green Park. The playgrounds are wheelchair accessible and include accessible play equipment such as spinning wheels and swing sets.
  • the enhancement of the boardwalk at Woodland Beach that provides an accessible path for users down to the water.
  • the replacement of the old conveyor at Cawaja Beach with a new rolling boardwalk.
  • the installation of stairs on the Kingfisher Trail between Concession 12 and Penetanguishene that allows connectivity with the Ganaraska Trail Network.

Additional accessible and active transportation enhancements will be completed this Fall.
