(Tiny, Ontario) The Township of Tiny’s Municipal Law Enforcement Department is reminding existing Short-Term Rental property owners to renew their licence for 2026.
Short-Term Rental By-law 22-017, as amended, allows up to 300 short-term rental licences to be issued annually. Only short-term-rental owners with approved licences can initiate the renewal application process. All licences expire annually on December 31 and need to be renewed and approved to operate the following calendar year.
“Since the onset of the short-term rental program, the intent has been to ensure that the rental properties are safe for both property owners and renters,” said Mayor David Evans. “The licensing fee ensures that the cost to administer and enforce the safety protections in this program follow a cost recovery model. Property owners are encouraged to renew their licence before the end of the year to save money and time on their renewal.”
Updated STR Fees
Council approved a change to the fee structure of the short-term-rental program through By-law 25-060, that will be effective as of January 1, 2026. The fee for STR licence holders that renew their licence prior to December 31st is $1750. The fee for new applications or property owners that have let their licence expire will be $2000.
Licence fees help with cost recovery of staff time spent on inspections, administration, and enforcement for the licensing program. The difference in fee amounts is intended to incentivize timely renewals and reduce the administrative burden and operational costs associated with processing expired applications, including inspections and reinitiating the application process.
STR Renewals
All STR licences expire on December 31 of each year and must be renewed annually. Any 2025 STR licence holder that renews for their 2026 STR licence prior to December 31, 2025, will pay $1750. If a 2025 STR licence holder does not renew by December 31, and chooses to apply later in 2026, their application will be expired and their application will be subject to the new application/expired licence fee of $2000. Remember that advertising for the 2026 season is not permitted without an approved 2026 licence.
The 2026 renewal process is now open! Property owners with a valid 2025 STR licence are encouraged to apply early to ensure they take advantage of the reduced fee, and so that staff are available to assist with any questions.
Reminder: The Township Office will be closed for Winter Holidays beginning December 24, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) and will reopen on January 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Please apply early so that staff are able to assist and answer questions prior to the closure.
If you have never had a licence before, please visit www.tiny.ca/STR to understand what is required and how to start the process. It is against the law to operate a short-term rental prior to obtaining a licence from the municipality.
Renewal licence applications are now open. For more information or to apply online, visit the township’s website at www.tiny.ca/STR.
