The Lake Huron Grasshopper, scientifically known as Trimerotropis huroniana, is silver-grey to brown in colour with speckles and banding on its front wings that help it to blend in with its sandy habitat.
The Lake Huron Grasshopper lives exclusively in open dune habitat along the shores of Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Its preferred habitat is the foredune, the low ridge of open bare sand covered with scattered grasses and located closest to the lake.
The Lake Huron Grasshopper is classified as threatened under the Species At Risk Act.
They have been identified in two locations in Tiny, on Giants Tomb (location B-8) and sections of Tiny Beaches between Concession 11 West and Concession 14 West (location B-9).
Tiny's Public Work's Department received a letter from Environment and Climate Change of Canada seeking input and involvement on the proposed Recovery Strategy for the Lake Huron Grasshopper. In response, the Public Works Director met with staff at Awenda Provincial Park for advice and suggestions on how to respond and ensure the township supports the Recovery Strategy.
To learn more, read Public Works Report PWR-017-26. Option 1 was supported by Council as seen in the Lake Huron Grasshopper Direction.
