Why has the Township developed a Pickleball Strategy?
Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing recreational activities in Tiny. The strategy provides a roadmap to guide future growth, improve facilities and programming, support volunteers, and ensure the sport remains accessible, inclusive, and sustainable for years to come.
Was the community consulted during the development of the strategy?
Yes. The Township conducted a community survey and hosted a Pickleball Open House and Focus Group Series. Feedback from more than 150 participants helped shape the recommendations and priorities identified in the strategy. Further, the strategy was open to public comment prior to publishing.
Is the Township creating a Pickleball Club?
The strategy recommends exploring the development of a community-led Pickleball Club through a phased approach. The first step would be establishing a Pickleball Working Group to help guide future discussions, identify volunteers, and support community engagement.
Will the Township be turning pickleball operations over to an outside organization?
No. The Township is not seeking a third-party organization or external operator to take over pickleball programming or management of Township courts.
The intent of the strategy is to foster the organic development of a local, community-based pickleball organization led by Township residents. Similar to many successful minor sport organizations, any future club would be developed locally, supported by volunteers, and nurtured with Township assistance until it becomes self-sustaining.
Who would own and manage the pickleball courts?
The Township of Tiny will continue to own, maintain, and oversee all municipal pickleball facilities. Court maintenance, capital improvements, scheduling policies, and facility investments will remain municipal responsibilities.
What role would a future Pickleball Club play?
A future community-based club could assist with:
- Volunteer coordination
- Social events and tournaments
- Player communication
- Program development
- Community outreach
- Advocacy for the sport
Any future club would work collaboratively with the Township and would not have ownership or control over Township facilities.
Will public access to pickleball courts remain available?
Yes. Maintaining accessible and affordable opportunities for residents remains a core principle of the strategy. Public access, drop-in opportunities, and inclusive programming will continue to be prioritized.
Will there be membership fees?
At this time, no membership fees are proposed for general public access to Township courts.
Should a community-led club emerge in the future, voluntary membership fees may be considered to support enhanced programming, leagues, tournaments, or social activities. Any such fees would be developed at the discretion of the club.
Why is the Township considering a Working Group first?
The Working Group approach allows interested residents to help shape the future of pickleball in Tiny before any formal club structure is considered. It provides an opportunity to:
- Build local leadership capacity
- Identify community priorities
- Develop governance principles
- Ensure inclusivity and transparency
- Determine whether there is sufficient volunteer support for a future club
How would a future club be different from a private operator?
A community-led club would be a local volunteer organization developed by and for Tiny residents. Its purpose would be to support participation, community building, and program development.
A private operator or third-party organization typically delivers services for commercial purposes. The Township is not pursuing that model through this strategy.
Will the Township continue offering pickleball programs?
Yes. The Township will continue to provide recreation programming, introductory lessons, facility scheduling, and community recreation opportunities. Any future club would complement Township services, not replace them. The Township will continue to offer indoor programming during the winter months.
How can residents get involved?
Residents interested in supporting the future of pickleball can:
- Participate in Township programs and events
- Attend future engagement sessions
- Volunteer for the Pickleball Working Group
- Share feedback with Township staff
- Assist with community events, tournaments, and social activities
What is the long-term vision for pickleball in Tiny?
The long-term vision is to create a connected, inclusive, and sustainable pickleball community where residents of all ages and skill levels have access to quality facilities, diverse programming, volunteer leadership opportunities, and meaningful social connections through sport.
